Saltdoll started with a question neither of us could shake.
What if we stopped measuring our lives by how stable they looked, and built something out of what we actually love instead?
Where we're from
To understand why, you have to know where we come from, and it is not as simple as saying we grew up on an island.
We moved around quite a bit growing up. Our school years were split between Jeju and Seoul—Jeju during the school year, Seoul during every break, back and forth for years. We also lived in the States during middle school, and later moved back for college. Even now, I live in a city near Seoul and go back to Jeju whenever I can.
For a long time, we felt like we belonged to several places but never quite completely to one. Every time we moved, we had to find our place again. Eventually, we started to wonder if we even belonged anywhere.
But somehow, Jeju always felt different. No matter where we had been or where we were going next, going back to the island always felt a little like coming home.
If you have ever felt caught between different places, or different versions of your life, that is a big part of where Saltdoll comes from.
The turning point
The real turning point came later, and further from home than either of us expected.
We both spent three months in Hawaii together, serving and volunteering through a mission trip. After those three months, we went our separate ways. I spent the next three months in Fiji, while my sister Angie spent three months in Samoa.
We were not there on vacation. We were there to serve, to learn, and to spend time with people very different from us. And even after we went our separate ways, we were both experiencing something that was changing the way we saw our lives.
Away from the noise of a normal week, we had time to slow down and ask bigger questions.
What if the point was not stability at all? What if it was pursuing what we love, and sharing that love with other people through what we make?
That question is where Saltdoll really began—not with a perfectly planned business idea, but with a feeling we could not quite put into words yet.
We came home with more of a feeling than a plan.
What we've been building
If you followed us on Instagram, you saw us try to turn that feeling into something real this summer, one small piece of the mood board at a time. Mosaic tiles, terracotta, and the kind of linen that looks lived-in rather than pressed into something it is not.
That series was us thinking out loud in public.
This is us finally explaining what we were building toward.
We have always been drawn to natural fibers and to clothing made with petite and shorter women in mind, because so much of what is out there simply is not made for us.
Our first pieces happen to be linen, made to be worn again and again rather than once and forgotten. We are still figuring out exactly where the brand will go long term, and we are okay with that. We would rather take our time getting it right than rush into deciding what Saltdoll has to be.
What we want you to know
We know what it is like to feel out of place. To wonder where you belong. To measure yourself against a life that looks more settled than yours does.
So if there is one thing we want Saltdoll to say back to you, it is this:
You are loved and valued, no matter what you do.
You were created to be loved, and to love others.
That belief is underneath everything we are building, whether or not it ever shows up on a size tag.
More than anything, we want our clothes to carry that same feeling: comfortable, familiar, and a little like home. Something you can reach for again and again and think, this feels like me.
Two sisters, moving between countries, an island, and a city, eventually decided to build something out of that in-between place instead of choosing one side.
We are still figuring it out as we go.
But we are glad you are here.
